Climb Yanapaccha Mountain

Yanapaccha is a mountain located in the Llanganuco valley, it is easy and good for taking a technical climbing course before climbing another high mountain, a good one for beginners who want to improve their level on climbing mountains with moderate difficulty, its summit offers a spectacular view of mountains in the Cordillera Blanca.

DAY 01: HUARAZ – LLANGANUCO – MORAINE CAMP (4,800 M.)

After breakfast in the hotel, we take private transport to drive along the Callejon de Huaylas on the north side of Huaraz city, we pass through different towns such as Carhuaz 2,650 m.  and Yungay town which was buried by an avalanche that fell from the Huascaran north peak in 1970, from the New Yungay at 2,500 m. we get to the Llanganuco valley, where we reach the Huascaran National Park office, where we get our entrance fee, then we continue driving along the valley where we will appreciate two lakes, Chinancocha and Orconcocha. We continue driving on zigzag until we reach kilometer 42 where we start trekking up for around 2 hours and a half to reach the moraine camp of Yanapaccha where we spend the night.

DAY 02: MOUNTAIN TRAINING

After having breakfast at Campo Moraine of Yanapaccha, we start trekking up until reaching the glacier, where we put on our climbing gear such as crampons, harness, helmet, ice ax, and others. Then on the glacier, we start training using correctly the rope making some knots, wearing correctly the crampons, using well the ice ax, etc. we train on small walls of 60°-70° degrees of only 12-15 meters, we rappel on a fixed rope, we train also self-rescue in a crevasse then in the afternoon we go back to the moraine camp have some meal and rest and spend a night there.

DAY 03: MORAINE CAMP – SUMMIT YANAPACCHA (5,460 M.) – MORAINE CAMP – HUARAZ

We get up early and we have a light and hot breakfast, we start trekking up at 02:00 a.m. to the glacier, where we put on our climbing gear to attempt the summit of Yanapaccha, near the top there is a wall of 65° degrees about 120 meters high where two technical ice-axes will be useful to reach the summit. Once, we get to the top we appreciate the view of some beautiful mountains like Contrayerbas, Chopicalqui, Huascaran, Huandoys, Pisco, Chacraraju, Artesonraju, and other ones. After enjoying the beautiful view of these peaks, we start climbing down using a fixed rope, we get to the moraine camp at 11:00 a.m. where we have a nice delicious lunch and then we trek down to kilometer 42, where a private transport waits for us to take us back to Huaraz for another 4 hours more.
